STATEMENT FROM MAYOR MENINO

Boston, Massachusetts: First, I want to congratulate the Boston Police Department and all the public safety agencies for responding in a coordinated effort today. As most of you know, there were reports of nine suspicious packages found throughout the city and area earlier today. At this time there is no reason to be alarmed. The coordinated response by all departments proves the system we have in place works. Today, my Office of Emergency Preparedness and the Boston Police Department shared intelligence with the Boston Regional Intelligence Center, Boston Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services, Massachusetts State Police, ATF and FBI and we will continue to do so whenever necessary.

It is outrageous, in a post 9/11 world, that a company would use this type of marketing scheme. I am prepared to take any and all legal action against Turner Broadcasting and its affiliates for any and all expenses incurred during the response to today’s incidents. Boston will look to coordinate our efforts going forward with Cambridge, Somerville and any other affected agencies.

In the last month the majority of burglaries and breaking and enterings in the district occurred through unlocked windows. Our detectives urge everybody to double-check their windows and make sure they are locked.

MAYOR'S COLD WEATHER ADVISORY

Boston, Massachusetts: Mayor Thomas M. Menino is urging residents to heed weather warnings and take extra precautions over the next few days with temperatures mostly in the 20s and 30s, with freezing wind chills and nights heading into single digits.

"We are particularly concerned about homeless individuals who may seek shelter in out of the way or isolated locations," Mayor Menino said. "My Emergency Shelter Commission is working with outreach providers, the Boston Police and Boston EMS to identify these locations and intensify our efforts to offer people shelter and safety. I ask all citizens who are aware of vulnerable individuals to be eyes and ears for us and to contact my 24-Hour Constituent Services line at 617-635-4500." If you encounter an individual that is having a medical emergency please call 911.

Street outreach teams will have extra vans out on the streets urging the homeless to stay in shelters; shelters will open earlier over the next few days and they will be open 24 hours a day in extreme weather. The Pine Street Inn is also putting additional vans on the street to assist people seeking shelter in the daytime. The city's Commission on the Affairs of the Elderly will be calling home bound seniors and privately run senior complexes to check on the elderly. The Commission has also held safety seminars for seniors the past few days.

If you are a tenant, your unit should be heated to 68 degrees during the day and 64 degrees at night. Alert your landlord first to correct any issues. If your landlord does not respond, the city's "No Heat" hotline number is 617-635-5300 or 617-635-4500 after hours. The city's Inspectional Services Department will investigate the situation and work with the landlord to get heat turned back on.

· For heating assistance, we urge residents to contact ABCD (Action for Boston Community Development) at 617-357-6012.

· If you have a complaint about your oil dealer's service, call Mayor Menino's Office of Consumer Affairs and Licensing at 617-635-3834.

Some general safety tips for winter weather from the Boston Fire Department:

Electric powered portable heaters should never be left on while sleeping and should be kept at least three feet away from combustible materials.
Do not overload electrical sockets
Never leave candles unattended
CO2 detectors are now required in homes by law. They must be within ten feet of sleeping areas.
Working smoking detectors should be on each floor of your home, particularly near bedrooms.

ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING

E-18 Hyde Park, Massachusetts: On January 22nd at 6:55 P.M. an unknown young black male, wearing a black stocking cap offered a ride to a 12-year old black male as he was walking home at the intersection of Dietz Rd and Senders Ct. The suspect, who was driving a white Dodge, pulled up along side the victim and asked "Hey little man, do you need a ride?" The victim then started running towards his home and the suspect said repeatedly, "Hey little man, wait, wait, wait." The victim later saw the car parked at the corner of Eastmont Rd and Belnap Rd and wrote down the plate number. Randolph PD pulled this vehicle over on the morning of January 23rd. Area E-18 responded to Randolph and are conducting an investigation.
This youth did the right thing. It is imperative that you instruct your children on what to do and not to do when approached by a stranger in these circumstances. The main thing is to tell your children "never go anywhere with a stranger."

PUBLIC SAFETY FORUM FEBRUARY 7TH

E-18 Hyde Park, Massachusetts: In conjunction with Boston Police Department E-18, Virginia M Allen, Attorney, is hosting a Public Safety Forum entitled Gun Violence: Seek Justice, Break the Silence, on Wednesday, February 7th at 7 P.M. at the Hyde Park Municipal Building at 1179 River St. Thus far, she has confirmation from Suffolk County District Attorney, Dan Conley; First Justice of the West Roxbury District Court, Kathleen Coffey; Chief Probation Officer of the West Roxbury District Court, Mark Prisco, Boston Police Deputy Superintendent of the Bureau of Field Services, Bruce Holloway and E-18 Captain, Frank Armstrong as speakers. She is awaiting responses from several other notable speakers.

She would like you to attend this forum and to lend your support to this cause.

Tragically, E-18, in 2006, saw a dramatic 700% increase in homicide from 1 in 2005 to 8 in 2006. The majorities of the 2006 homicides are gun related and remain unsolved. There is a silence out there that needs to be broken, not only in terms of solving these crimes, but also in terms of condemning such violence in our neighborhoods. Shots fired calls, sadly, are all too frequent in some of our neighborhoods. Until we all speak out as a united community and make a statement condemning such violence and demanding justice for the deceased, such gun violence will continue.

Virginia has met with Area E-18 Captain, Frank Armstrong, at length and he is fully supportive of this effort and has encouraged her wholeheartedly.

Before school ends she hopes to have some businesses willing to sponsor, for school children, a Writing/Art/Music/Video contest with the theme: Seek Justice, Break the Silence. Until justice is sought for the deceased, the cycle of violence will continue. We need to re-invigorate civic pride and obligation for all to put a lid on this epidemic of violence across many of our major cities. We need to take care of our own.
